How To Take Misoprostol (Misoprost 200 mcg)

Misoprostol should be taken after meals. Take this medicine at bedtime. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Misoprostol must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.

Take Misoprostol exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more than instructed by your doctor.

Dosage of Misoprostol (Misoprost 200 mcg)

Gastric and duodenal ulcers; NSAID-associated ulceration: 800 mcg/day in 2-4 divided doses for at least 4 weeks, may continue up to 8 weeks if needed. 

Prophylaxis of NSAID-induced ulcers: 200 mcg 2-4 times/day, may reduce dose to 100 mcg 4 times/day. 

Termination of pregnancy (49 days or less duration): 400 mcg as a single dose, given 36-48 hours after mifepristone.

Missed Dose of Misoprostol (Misoprost 200 mcg)

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your usual dosing schedule.

Do not double a dose under any circumstances.

Overdose

Signs of overdose may include the following:

  • Convulsions
  • Sedation
  • Tremor
  • Dyspnea
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fever
  • Palpitations
  • Hypotension
  • Bradycardia

Seek medical help immediately.

Contraindications of Misoprostol (Misoprost 200 mcg)

People with the following medical conditions should not take Misoprostol:

  • Pregnancy
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Contraindication for mifepristone
  • Pregnancy beyond 49 days of amenorrhea
  • Uterine abnormality
  • Placenta praevia or unexplained vag bleeding after 24 weeks gestation
  • Fetal malpresentation
  • Signs/symptoms of chorioamnionitis 
  • Concurrent use of ototoxic drugs or other labor induction agents.

Misoprostol may have the following side effects:

  • Diarrhea
  • Dyspepsia
  • Flatulence
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Rashes
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Increased uterine contractility
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Hypotension

Potentially Fatal: 

  • Toxic shock 
  • Septic shock following infections

Warnings of Misoprostol (Misoprost 200 mcg)

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking the following medicines: 

  • Oxytocin
  • Carbetocin
  • Magnesium-containing antacids 

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

How Does It Work?

Misoprostol works by protecting the gastrointestinal mucosa by inhibiting basal, stimulated and nocturnal acid secretion, reducing the volume of gastric secretions and increasing the secretion of bicarbonate and mucus. It also induces contractions of smooth muscle fibres of the myometrium and relaxation of the cervix uteri.

  • Prophylaxis of NSAID-induced ulcers
  • Termination of pregnancy (49 days or less duration)

Take special precautions if you have the following conditions:

  • Heart disease
  • Low blood pressure
  • Kidney disease
  • Inflammatory disease of the intestines/bowel
  • Dehydration
  • Avoid alcohol

Storage Conditions

  • Store at or below 25°C.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
  • Do not use Misoprostol that is expired or out of expiry date.
